About the GRRA

The Gibsons Ratepayers & Residents Association was formed in 2022 to advocate for sustainable growth and a clear vision for the development of Gibsons.

Our vision

We will advocate for this beautiful town to retain its seaside village character and ensure that growth does not exceed the town’s sustainable carrying capacity.

Our mission

We will inspire and encourage residents, ratepayers, and neighbourhood groups in Gibsons to engage in community issues that impact the social, environmental, and economic wellbeing of current and future residents.

We use the collective expertise of our members to take on the challenges of:

  1. Purpose-built affordable housing
  2. Right-sizing Town of Gibsons government, taxes, and rates
  3. Managing growth sustainably

Community discussion

Affordable housing

Affordable housing is a foundation of a vibrant community. It helps people live in Gibsons while working locally, and supports the workers who provide health, food, transportation, and other services. Local taxes and housing costs can affect renters, homeowners on fixed incomes, and long-time residents.

Right-sized local government

Residents can ask whether the Town’s responsibilities, services, and resources are appropriately scaled for a community of its size, and how those choices affect taxes and rates.

Sustainable growth

Gibsons has limited land and water resources. Land-use decisions should be informed by a clear understanding of carrying capacity and the infrastructure required to support growth. Development should contribute fairly to the costs it creates.

The GRRA’s November 2024 post raised questions about how aquifer capacity, the Official Community Plan, and projected housing growth are considered together. Read the issue brief.
